Morocco vs Spainvs Portugal

Choosing a winter warm-weather training camp destination: weather, flight times, costs and what makes each one different.

Spain and Portugal have long been the default winter camp destinations for UK and Northern European teams. Morocco is now a serious alternative. Here is an honest comparison.

Weather in January

Agadir averages highs around 21 °C, warmer than most mainland Spanish and Portuguese camp bases, where January highs are typically in the mid-to-high teens. The Canary Islands are similarly warm but usually cost more for groups.

Flight times

From London, Marrakech is about 3h40 and Agadir about 4h00, a little longer than the Algarve or the Costa del Sol (roughly 2h45–3h). From Germany and Scandinavia the difference is smaller.

Cost on the ground

Hotels, coaches, food and venue hire in Morocco are generally lower than in Spain and Portugal for equivalent quality, which can offset the slightly longer flight for many groups.

Opposition and experience

Spanish and Portuguese camp hubs are busy with visiting teams, so you often play other touring sides. In Morocco, friendlies are usually against Moroccan clubs and academies, and the cultural side of the trip is very different from home.

When Spain or Portugal may suit you better

  • You need the shortest possible flight for a two-night camp
  • You want a specific high-performance centre you've used before
  • Your squad includes nationalities that need a visa for Morocco

When Morocco wins

  • You want reliable warmth in December and January
  • Budget per player matters
  • You want new opposition and a trip players remember
